Amit Mishra to Narine: Indian T20 League’s Most Successful Spinners

Amit Mishra is very close to scripting history this Indian T20 League season as he is just a few wickets shy from being the all-time highest wicket-taker of the league. He is all set to overtake the 170-wicket mark set by another great of the Indian T20 League, Lasith Malinga, who retired from cricket earlier this year. Mishra has been a superstar in the tournament from the very first season back in 2008 and till now is producing match-winning performances for his franchise.

Along with him, there are four other spin bowlers who are legends of this tournament and are the most successful spinners in the history of the competition. Let’s look at who these bowlers are and what makes them spinning wizards.

AMIT MISHRA

The wily old leg spinner for Team Delhi has been their second-highest wicket-taker so far in the season. Amit Mishra has all the tricks in his kitty and his experience of 154 matches in the league has been used effectively so far by the team management. As mentioned earlier, he is just a few wickets away from being the all-time highest wicket-taker of the league and the veteran spinner would thoroughly deserve the tag. He also holds the record of getting the most hat-tricks in the history of the competition, so don’t be surprised if he adds to that tally this season.

PIYUSH CHAWLA

It is surprising that defending champions Team Mumbai haven’t made use of Piyush Chawla so far in the season. Perhaps they are waiting for wickets to slow down further to unleash the skills of the leg spinner. Chawla is also one player who has been around since the very beginning and has had a key part to play in almost every season. He is one of the most experienced spinners going around the circuit and in 164 Indian T20 League matches, he has picked up 156 wickets and sits as the joint-third highest wicket-taker in the history of the competition.

HARBHAJAN SINGH

There are not many bowlers in the league this season who can boast the kind of experience Harbhajan Singh has when it comes to spin bowling. The off-spinner burst onto the scene back in 2001 in one of India’s most famous series wins. In T20 cricket, Harbhajan knows exactly what is supposed to be done and the captain can hand him the new ball or make him bowl at the death, and he will deliver almost every time. He holds the record of registering the most number of dot balls in the league and is the fifth-highest wicket-taker with 150 scalps to his name.

RAVICHANDRAN ASHWIN

It is unfortunate that we won’t be seeing more of R Ashwin in this season’s Indian T20 League but the off-spinner has already entertained us plenty in the 159 matches he has played in the league. He was one of the products of this league who made a name for himself and earned his national call up after solid performances in. Ashwin seems to be ageing as fine as wine and you never know when he is at his peak. He is a wonderfully skilful bowler and has picked 139 wickets so far in the league.

SUNIL NARINE

There were seasons in the middle from 2012 to 2014 when Sunil Narine was practically unplayable and his quota of four overs would always be looked at as the gamechanger in the match. Since he has had to remodel his action, his effectiveness has gone down but he still remains a key member of the Kolkata squad. He is eighth on the all-time highest wicket-taker list with 130 wickets in just 124 matches.
