Hardik Pandya Appointed Captain As India Announce Tour of Ireland Squad

Another Indian squad has been announced, this time around for the two T20Is scheduled to take place in Ireland on June 26 and 28. The major talking point post the squad announcement was that Hardik Pandya has been appointed as the captain of the Indian side after the success he tasted in the 2022 season of the Indian T20 League as a leader.

This squad doesn’t feature many big names of Indian cricket as the Test team is currently in the United Kingdom preparing for the fifth re-scheduled Test against England. It provides a wonderful opportunity for the selectors to test the bench strength of the Indian white-ball setup and here’s how the squad is shaping up for the Irish tour.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda

The two names that immediately stand out in the batters section of the squad are Suryakumar Yadav and Rahul Tripathi. Surya who missed the majority of the Indian T20 League 2022 season and the recently-concluded series against South Africa has regained his full fitness. While Rahul Tripathi has been handed his first national call-up after a brilliant season in the 2022 T20 League.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda have retained their spots in the T20I team for this tour as well.

Hardik Pandya ©, Axar Patel, Venkatesh Iyer

The biggest news for Indian cricket is that Hardik Pandya will be the captain of the team for these two T20Is against Ireland. After emerging to be the most promising captain of the Indian T20 League recently, many believe that Pandya should be named as Rohit Sharma’s permanent deputy. This will be a smooth introduction to international captaincy for India’s premier all-rounder.

Axar Patel and Venkatesh Iyer have both been retained as the other all-round options in this squad.

Ishan Kishan, Dinesh Karthik, Sanju Samson

When we look at the wicketkeeping department, Sanju Samson is the one that immediately catches our attention as he is back in the T20I side after surprisingly being dropped for the South African series.

Ishan Kishan will start as the first-choice keeper. Dinesh Karthik will be hoping to replicate his top performances on this tour as well and further cement his place in India’s World Cup squad.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (vc), Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel

Recently crowned Player of the Series, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named as Hardik’s deputy for this tour of Ireland. While Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel will form India’s three-pronged pace bowling attack.

Young bowlers in Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh have been picked again and fans will be hoping to see them get their debut in the second T20I.

Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi

The spin department has the two leggies, India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi. The Irish usually struggle against spin and the two leggies could have a field day in sunny Dublin.
