Cummins’ Fifty to De Kock’s Hundred: Top Moments from 2022 League Stage

The Indian T20 League never fails to disappoint and the 2022 season was no different. Whether it was a blistering knock that matched the fastest fifty in the competition by Pat Cummins or it was Quinton de Kock’s swashbuckling 140* in the league stage, the 2022 season of the Indian T20 League has seen it all.

So after such an exciting league stage, we did the tough job of finding five key game-changing moments that stood out from this phase. Here’s our shortlist.

CUMMINS’ DAY OUT IN PUNE

In just his first match of the season, the Australian red-ball captain pulled off the impossible. He smashed a 14-ball fifty, which is the joint-fastest fifty in the history of the competition. Cummins had an off-day with the ball, his primary skill, but more than made up for it with the bat as he took his team home comfortably from a position where a defeat was on the cards for Team Kolkata.

TEWATIA STRIKES AGAINST PUNJAB YET AGAIN

Next up is Rahul Tewatia pulling off a ‘Tewatia’ at the Wankhede Stadium against his favourite opposition Team Punjab. The red of Punjab seems to get the best out of Tewatia the finisher as it took him just three balls to make a lasting impression. His team was in a spot of bother in the 20th over in this match when Tewatia strode to the middle. Gujarat needed twelve of the last two deliveries and Tewatia made sure that his team got over the line with two cracking sixes off the final deliveries.

CHAHAL TURNING THE GAME ON ITS HEAD

Our next moment comes from arguably the most exciting game from the league phase. It was when Team Rajasthan took on Team Kolkata at the Brabourne Stadium. Kolkata were chasing 218 after a remarkable century by Jos Buttler in the first innings. Kolkata were well on track in this chase but it was the chance for Yuzvendra Chahal to steal the limelight. In just one over, Chahal changed the complexion of the game entirely. He picked up the first hat-trick of the season that included the big wicket of Shreyas Iyer. Chahal replicating his meme as his celebration at the end just made the moment extra special.

NO ONE HITS THE BALL HARDER THAN LIVINGSTONE

The fourth moment of the league stage goes to the shot played by the big-hitting Liam Livingstone. Livingstone’s six made all the commentators in the box just gasp for air in disbelief for a minute or so. Mohammed Shami was the bowler on the receiving end and Liam smashed him for one of the biggest hits ever seen in the Indian T20 League. The ball kept travelling for ages and the six distance calculator labelled it as 117 metres. It is the biggest hit of the season so far and it isn’t surprising that it came off the bat of Liam Livingstone.

DE KOCK WITH THE THIRD HIGHEST LEAGUE SCORE

Finally we have Team Lucknow’s keeper batter, Quinton de Kock, to round up the list of the top moments that stood from the 2022 league stage. This innings came from the match between Lucknow and Kolkata. Batting first, de Kock stepped up under pressure and scored a scintillating 140*, which is the third best score in the league’s history. De Kock was dropped on 12 in this innings and he sure made to make this error count. It was simply outstanding to see him play this brilliant knock on a pitch that wasn’t the easiest to bat on.
