Dinesh Karthik to Hetmyer: Top Five Finishers of Indian T20 League 2022

Finishing the innings is the toughest task in T20 cricket and teams need designated finishers for the job. It’s often pretty difficult to find such players as you need this batter to have the ability to strike the very first ball he faces for a six. Not many can execute this role and this is where players like Dinesh Karthik or Shimron Hetmyer have their price worth in gold. In this piece, we’ve shortlisted five such players who have donned the role of a finisher to perfection in the 2022 Indian T20 League season.

Dinesh Karthik is having a dream season in the Indian T20 League. He was written off before coming into this season as some people called him a part-time commentator and a part-time cricketer. Such has been his impact on the season that there are talks of him making a comeback in the national side for the all-important T20 World Cup later this year.

Karthik has been given the role of a finisher by Team Bangalore’s management as they wanted him to replace the virtually irreplaceable AB de Villiers for this season. This may be a controversial statement, but DK seems to have done even a better job than what AB would have done in the Bangalore jersey this season.

Karthik has struck at a whopping strike rate of 200 with 274 runs to his name. He has the best strike rate in the competition for any player who has scored more than 100 runs in the season so far. Karthik has been a master finisher this season and is one of the biggest reasons why Team Bangalore are in contention of finishing in the playoff spots.

There’s no surprise to see Andre Russell making this list. He has for years now been one of the best finishers in the league and 2022 has turned out to be no different for the Jamaican. His team hasn’t been in the best of the form so far in the competition but Dre Russ’ performances haven’t been hampered by that.

The powerful batter has struck at a rate of 183.66 with 281 runs to his name.

Another fellow Jamaican who has been tormenting the bowlers in the league this year has been Team Delhi’s, Rovman Powell. He had a slow start to the competition which wasn’t surprising as it was his first year in the Indian T20 League but once he got his form back, he has been at his destructive best again.

Powell has scored 205 runs so far in the season at a strike rate of 161.41, there’s surely more to come from his blade in the season.

Shivam Dube has had a breakthrough season with the bat in Team Chennai’s colours. Dube has always had the power game but it is coming along perfecting well in the current season. Even though he has missed out on the last couple of matches due to an injury, Dube has accumulated 279 runs in the campaign already at a strike rate of 160.34 which includes a well-crafted innings of 95*.

Finally, we have Team Rajasthan’s specialist finisher Shimron Hetmyer. He is yet another West Indian on this list, that tells you the kind of firepower there is in that T20 side. Hetmyer has been executing the role of a finisher to perfection in the last couple of seasons with Team Delhi and he continued his good form in the pink of Team Rajasthan in 2022 as well.

Hetmyer has scored 291 runs so far at a brilliant strike rate of 166.28. He is currently in Guyana for the birth of his first child but has vowed to come back and finish what he has started with Team Rajasthan.
