A Look At the Indian T20 League Player Retentions

The Indian T20 League will see a complete turnaround from the upcoming 2022 season with two new teams entering the mix. The recent player retentions across clubs have given a good trailer as to what to expect in the mega auction. Big names, new leaders and exciting talents will all be a part of the auction pool.

The Indian T20 League auction held on November 30 certainly raised a lot of eyebrows with Team Delhi deciding to part ways with former captain Shreyas Iyer, Team Mumbai axing their ace all-rounder Hardik Pandya and the likes of Rashid Khan, David Warner and KL Rahul not being a part of retention plans for their respective teams.

Let’s understand in detail the player retentions and why they were retained.

Mumbai fans will miss the services of the Pandya brothers but will be happy that they were able to retain a solid core. Rohit Sharma was retained for a whopping 16CR followed by Jasprit Bumrah being their second highest for 12CR. Local boy Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard were retained for 8CR and 6CR each. With a successful captain, a death-over specialist, a solid middle-order batter and a destructive finisher, Mumbai seems to have balanced its retention in the best possible manner.

With the former captain, Shreyas Iyer left out of the retention scenario, Delhi seems to have missed out on a player of the highest calibre. The management has shown faith in Rishabh Pant and he will be leading the Capitals alongside Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje. Shikhar Dhawan who has been their most successful batter in recent years and Kagiso Rabada who managed to help Delhi win some nail biters were not retained. If this comes back to haunt Delhi is something we have to see.

Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammad Siraj will be the Namma Bengaluru boys who will be donning the red for Team Bangalore. While the Delhi da Munda continues to be Bangalore’s fan favourite, he will be seen in a new role after he decided to step down from captaincy last season. Virat Kohli was the first retention for 15CR. The star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was retained for 11CR. While Yuzvendra Chahal was left out, Mohammad Siraj was a shocking inclusion for 7CR.

One more season for Captain Cool. MS Dhoni was Team Chennai’s second retention with 12CR as Ravindra Jadeja was assured first place with 16CR. Team management has shown a lot of faith in Moeen Ali as he was retained for 8CR. Last season’s Orange Cap holder Ruturaj Gaikwad, who showed a glimpse of what he can achieve, was also amongst the top 4. However, Faf Du Plessis, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar missed out on the spots. While Thala will continue his legacy for team Yellow, Chinna Thala Raina will be seen with a new franchise in the coming season.

After a series of controversies about clashes between David Warner and the team management, Team Hyderabad have finally decided to part ways with the Aussie. What comes as a shocker is wrist spinner Rashid Khan will also not be a part of the Orange Army, after being associated with the team for several years. Kane Williamson will be the one to lead the men in Orange after he secured 14CR. The Jammu and Kashmir’s promising duo of Umran Malik and Abdul Samad were amongst the ones retained by the franchise. Umran Malik was in the news for his raw pace and we have seen the potential of Abdul Samad as he tonked sixes to bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins.

Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine are the four players who will be the core of Kolkata. While most of the teams struggle to find a good all-rounder, this certainly is not Kolkata’s headache. Venky Mysore and his team will be on the look out for a new captain as both Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik were not a part of the management’s plan.

The Punjabi Munde’s were not in a mood to retain four players as they were left with very few to choose from. With KL Rahul looking out for new options, Mayank Agarwal was on their priority list as he was offered 12CR to stay with the team. The lanky left-armer Arshdeep Singh who has been a mainstay for Team Punjab in the death overs has been retained. Punjab will be looking out for more options in the upcoming auction.

Team Rajasthan has a lot to offer but has not been in the best of its forms. Captain Sanju Samson was retained for 14CR alongside Jos Buttler (10CR) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (4CR). One would have thought Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes will be the players to retain, but recent injury scare and unavailability was the reason stated for their exclusion.
