The Indian T20 League is a great leveller and some of the legends of the league like Kieron Pollard and Virat Kohli are struggling to match their high standards in the 2022 season. In this blog, we’re looking at the five such high profile players who have underperformed so far in the current season.
KIERON POLLARD (TEAM MUMBAI)
For years now, Kieron Pollard has been one of the most ferocious batters in the Indian T20 League. He has been an influential figure in the success that Team Mumbai have tasted with their five titles. So to see him struggle the way he is struggling in the 2022 season is a bit of a surprise.
Pollard has been a shadow of himself in the 2022 season with just 144 runs in eleven matches at an uncharacteristically low strike rate of 107.46. Bowlers seem to have found the chink in his armoury and so far, Pollard hasn’t had any reply to that. There were talks of him being dropped from the eleven as Team Mumbai have players like Tim David and Fabian Allen waiting in the ranks. He has already retired from international cricket and seems like this could be the very last of him in the Indian T20 League as well.
VIRAT KOHLI (TEAM BANGALORE)
The biggest surprise this season has been the form of Virat Kohli. Never before have we seen Kohli struggle this much to get bat on ball. He has already got three ducks in the season which is very unlike him. He had a decent start to the campaign but after a few misfortunes in running between the wickets, Kohli’s form has just gone missing.
In eleven matches, Kohli has scored just 216 runs at an average of 19.64 and an underwhelming strike rate of 111.34. The only fifty he scored actually cost his team the game with the way he slowed down during the mid-phase of the innings. His lack of form is a real concern for both his franchise and the national team.
RAVINDRA JADEJA (TEAM CHENNAI)
The season couldn’t have gone worse for Ravindra Jadeja. He was handed the captaincy of the franchise at the very last minute and he looked like a fish out of water. He resigned from his post and handed the captaincy back to MS Dhoni midway and now seems to be ruled out of the season with an injury. He has failed to have an impact with both bat and ball and it is a bit baffling to see him struggle so much given he was in rich form leading up to the competition.
ROHIT SHARMA (TEAM MUMBAI)
The Indian captain and Team Mumbai’s captain, Rohit Sharma has also had a season to forget thus far. Sharma has managed to score just 200 runs in the eleven matches played at a below par average and strike rate of 18.18 and 125, respectively. No wonder Team Mumbai are dead last in the points table with both their star players in Sharma and Pollard having a disastrous campaign.
KANE WILLIAMSON (TEAM HYDERABAD)
Lastly, we have Team Hyderabad’s captain Kane Williamson. Even though he has led the team well and they are in contention for the playoff spots but his personal form has been horrendous. He is the only batter on this list who has failed to get his strike rate above 100 in the season while averaging just 19.90. His lack of form is a huge concern for the franchise as he is their leader and they want him to lead from the front. Read: Dinesh Karthik to Hetmyer: Top Five Finishers of Indian T20 League 2022
