Shimron Hetmyer to Pollard: Best Cameos of Indian T20 League

With the advent of T20 cricket, the conventional logic of one batsman scoring big runs in an innings and winning the game for his team has gone out of the window, with the strike rate having more weightage as compared to the average. That’s one of the reasons why players like Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya and others earn the big bucks in the Indian T20 League. The franchises are looking for players who could play these cameos and swing the momentum in their teams’ favour.

Here we take a look at the top cameos from the 2020 edition of the Indian T20 League.

SHIMRON HETMYER vs Hyderabad | 42 RUNS OFF 22 BALLS

In a season where Delhi reached the final of the tournament for the first time, Shimron Hetmyer failed to achieve his true potential. He was in and out of the team because he never really got going. Still, this was an important knock for the team and it came at a time when Delhi needed the Caribbean batsman the most, that is, in the second qualifier against Hyderabad.

He came to bat in the 14th over of the first innings and changed the momentum of the game. He struck four fours and one six to strike at 190.90 and take his team to a commendable score of 189. His cameo turned out to be the reason why Delhi went on to reach the final against Mumbai.

KIERON POLLARD vs Punjab | 34 RUNS OFF 12 BALLS

An in-form Kieron Pollard is probably the most destructive T20 batsman going around in the world right now. No boundary is big enough for the Trinidadian and no bowling is good enough to stop this rampaging batsman.

Unfortunately for Punjab, they were on the receiving end of one of the top cameos of this season. Batting first, Mumbai seemed to be in a run when the Punjab spinners, Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin spun a web in the middle overs. Pollard walked out to the centre in the 16th over with just 116 runs on the board. He struck a blistering partnership with Nathan Coulter-Nile and the duo put up 57 runs in practically no time. Pollard took the death bowlers to the cleaners and helped his team reach a target of 176.

PAT CUMMINS vs Mumbai | 33 RUNS OFF 12 BALLS

There was a lot of talk about the price tag of Pat Cummins before the start of this season. Kolkata had bought him for a massive number, one which is difficult to show their worth by a fast bowler. This was their first match of the campaign and bowling first, Cummings looked rusty and was taken to the cleaners by the Mumbai batsmen. In just three overs he conceded 49 runs and had an outing to forget with the ball.

He sort of made amends with the bat as he finished as Kolkata’s top-scorer in this match. With four sixes and one four, he struck at a rate of 275 and helped his team reach closer to the target.

RAVINDRA JADEJA vs Kolkata | 31 RUNS OFF 11 BALLS

Ravindra Jadeja as a T20 player has been a constant underperformer over the years. This year it seemed like his role was clear in that Chennai team and he was handed the responsibility of a finisher in that team. In a season which went completely off-plan, Jadeja’s power-hitting was one of the few positives to take for the Chennai management.

Kolkata had posted 172 runs in the first innings and they were playing to keep themselves alive in the tournament. Chennai had nothing to lose as their hopes of qualifying had already been squashed. The match seemed to be slipping away from Chennai’s hands when Jadeja took to the field.

He managed to score 21 runs off Lockie Ferguson in the penultimate over of the game leaving just seven runs to get in the final over. Jadeja finished the match off in style scoring two massive sixes off Kamlesh Nagarkoti and with that Kolkata’s hopes for qualifying for the playoffs came to an end.

JOFRA ARCHER vs Chennai | 27 RUNS OFF 8 BALLS

Jofra Archer had a season to remember for a long time on a personal note. He was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season in a campaign where his team finished last in the table. He has always been known for his ability to strike the ball big with the bat and this season he proved he is a dangerous batsman.

This cameo against Chennai came at Sharjah which was a nightmare for the bowlers in the season. He came in the nineteenth over and smashed the Chennai bowlers for four sixes in those eight balls. He helped his team go past the 200-mark which proved to be too much for Chennai to chase.
