Picking the Indian Squad for Sri Lanka vs India Series

A Sri Lanka vs India series consisting of three-match ODIs and T20Is was recently announced by the President of the Board of Control of India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly. This Sri Lanka vs India series is set to begin on July 13, when most of the first-choice players would be in England participating in the five-match Test series against the Three Lions. Hence, the BCCI has confirmed that a completely separate Indian team will be sent to Sri Lanka for the white ball series.

This tour presents a wonderful opportunity for the players on the fringes of the Indian team to get a call-up and make a late claim to the white-ball squad ahead of the T20 World Cup later in the year. In this piece, we’ve picked a 20-man squad for the Sri Lanka vs India white-ball series.

TOP-ORDER

Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan, Devdutt Padikkal

The Indian setup is blessed with some incredibly talented top-order batters, so much so that even in a second-string team, the squad can have the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw opening the innings for the country. Ishan Kishan has already made his India debut and after a breathtaking domestic white-ball season followed by top performances in the 2021 Indian T20 League, Devdutt Padikkal deserves his maiden India call up.

MIDDLE-ORDER

Shreyas Iyer (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Manish Pandey

Shreyas Iyer is expected to make a comeback after the horrific injury he sustained in the series against England. If he is deemed fit for the tour then he should be given the mantle of leading the Indian team. He has already successfully led his Indian T20 League franchise, Team Delhi to the final and is one of the captains in the making for the national side.

Apart from Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav should look to continue his impressive start in international cricket. We’d like to bring Sanju Samson and Manish Pandey back in contention for selection as both are outstanding talents.

ALL-ROUNDERS

Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Tewatia, Harshal Patel

The Pandya brothers are sure shot picks in the squad. Along with them, Rahul Tewatia and the Purple Cap holder of the 2021 Indian T20 League Harshal Patel should be among the top picks for the all-rounder spots. Both are T20 specialists and can be useful in the coming T20 World Cup

SPINNERS

Yuzvendra Chahal, Varun Chakravarthy, Rahul Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav

Spin is a department where the team has been struggling to find quality players. Before the 2019 World Cup, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were the deadly duo and were the X-factor for the team. However, recently, their performances haven’t been up to the mark, especially in Kuldeep’s case, so that spot is up for grabs. Rahul Chahar seems to be in the driving seat as the front-line spinner and Varun Chakravarthy, subject to clearance of the fitness test, brings his aura of mystery with him.

FAST BOWLERS

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini

The depth in fast bowling reserves is also increasing by the day in Indian cricket. An attack spearheaded by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar and T Natarajan can make any side in the world uncomfortable. Navdeep Saini would be the out-and-out fast bowler in the squad and will add another dimension to the attack.

Predicted India Squad: Shreyas Iyer (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Navdeep Saini, T Natarajan, Rahul Chahar, Varun Chakravarthy, Sanju Samson, Rahul Tewatia, Harshal Patel, Devdutt Padikkal, Kuldeep Yadav, Manish Pandey
