Previewing the Anticipated India vs New Zealand First Test

India vs New Zealand first Test is all set to be played at the Green Park in Kanpur and fans in the city would witness a Test match at the venue after a gap of five long years. Interestingly the last Test match played at Kanpur was also against the same opposition, which India went on to win by 197 runs. The Kiwis would come into this contest on the back of being the inaugural World Test Championship winners having beaten India at Southampton earlier this year. This would be New Zealand’s first series in the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle.

After an overdose of T20 cricket, the purist would relish the opportunity of witnessing their favourite players in the white jersey again, playing with a familiar red ball. So what can we expect from the India vs New Zealand first Test? Let’s find out.

TIME RUNNING OUT FOR KEY INDIAN BATTERS

Two of India’s mainstays in the batting department, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have been lacking the number of runs that are expected of them. Rahane would be leading the side in the absence of Virat Kohli in this first Test with Pujara as his deputy, but both captain and vice-captain are under pressure coming into this Test series. They are classy batters and have proved their worth on numerous occasions for the Indian team but they seem to be on the last string of their careers. There are plenty of young top-class talents waiting in the wings and time seems to be running out for this duo.

SHREYAS IYER TO GET A DATE WITH TEST CRICKET

KL Rahul has been ruled out of this Test series due to a thigh strain and Suryakumar Yadav has been named as his replacement. It was shaping up to be Shubman Gill’s time in the middle order, but with KL’s injury, Gill would certainly bat at the top of the order alongside Mayank Agarwal. It would have been a perfect series for Hanuma Vihari to make himself a proper Test regular but bizarrely, he finds himself on the tour of South Africa with India-A. It means that Shreyas Iyer who was originally named in the squad would get a chance to make his Test debut in this first Test.

INDIA UNBEATEN AT KANPUR SINCE 1983

India’s record at Kanpur is too strong for the Kiwis. They haven’t tasted defeat since 1983 when the great West Indies team beat the Indians at Kanpur. Since then it has been a one-way traffic at the Green Park, something the Indian camp can be confident about. 250 seems to be the average score at Kanpur but in the past few Tests, top order batters have enjoyed batting on those batting-friendly conditions. Expect batters who get their eye in to cash in majorly.
