What All to Expect in the Sri Lanka vs India First ODI

After a delay of a week, India’s tour of Sri Lanka is about to kick off at Colombo. The Sri Lanka vs India first ODI promises to give us plenty of storylines and could open up a possibility of having more such tours where two different squads would travel to different countries, thus leading to more commercial avenues.

It’ll be interesting to see how players who weren’t the regulars in the Indian team may step up and have major roles to play in this series. Here’s what to expect in the Sri Lanka vs India first ODI.

DYNAMIC DUO AS OPENERS FOR INDIA

In all likelihood, India are all set to field captain Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw as their openers. The deadly duo has already enjoyed each others’ company for their Indian T20 League franchise, Team Delhi and has often taken games away from the opposition early in the match. They are both capable of playing a blazing knock but given the current form of the two, expect Shaw to go all guns blazing early on while Dhawan plays the second fiddle in the beginning.

LEADERS IN THE MAKING

There are plenty of interesting names in this squad that have been picked for the tour of Sri Lanka. There are natural leaders in the squad already and the management would be looking at future captain figures as well. Dhawan has been given the role of the captain but Gabbar won’t be alone in the leadership camp. He has the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya, who have plenty of international experience behind them. Then there is Sanju Samson, Manish Pandey, Nitish Rana and Krunal Pandya, all of whom have led their state teams in the domestic competition. So expect these young players to take on key leadership roles in this tour.

HOSTS AIMING FOR WORLD CUP SUPER LEAGUE POINTS

Sri Lanka had a disastrous tour of England both on and off the field. They would be hoping to make amends in the series against India where the first objective would be to get some solid World Cup Super League points. They currently sit on the second last position in the table and need to turn around starting with this series. India, on the other hand, have already qualified for the 2023 50-Over World Cup as the hosts of the competition.

PLACES UP FOR GRABS IN THE INDIA T20 TEAM

With the T20 World Cup coming shortly in October, all these players would be under close observation throughout the tour. There are three T20Is in the tour that could have an impact on the selection of the squad for the World Cup, but the three ODIs would be key factors as well. India is still unsure about its premier spinner in the T20 format and that is where Rahul Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy would look to outshine each other in this tour. The opening spot is a bit of a concern as well for the Indian team and players like Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw would want to make a late run for that role.
