Bundesliga: Angry Bulls Meet the Determined Wolves In Huge Clash

RB Leipzig vs VfL Wolfsburg

Die Roten Bullen host VfL Wolfsburg over at Red Bull Arena this weekend in what will be an epic clash of the best of the rest.

With Bayern Munich confirmed as Bundesliga champions once more, much of the focus in these last few matchdays will be on who gets the highly-coveted Champions and Europa League qualifications.

Leipzig and Wolfsburg are in good shape since both are in the top four, placing second and third respectively with 64 and 60 points.

However, other teams in Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt are breathing down their necks and both will look to capitalise should either Leipzig or Wolfsburg slip up in their last few games.

SBOTOP football fans can anticipate a belter since Leipzig and Wolfsburg are evenly matched on paper. Their last three games ended in stalemates, and both are keen to have one over the other when they meet once again.

Talking Points

Tough week for RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig look to secure their top two finish as soon as possible after a miserable week.

The Red Bulls were flattened twice by Borussia Dortmund in just a span of five days with an aggregate tally of 7-3, coming from their league match as well as in the DFB-Pokal finals.

With Julian Nagelsmann headed to Bayern Munich next season, he would prefer to end his 2020/21 campaign on a high with a couple more wins.

Nagelsmann has been receiving plaudits for transforming RB Leipzig into a genuine contender this season. Despite losing their top scorer in Timo Werner to Chelsea last summer, the Red Bulls’ overall form didn’t fall off at all.

Scoring became a collective duty and it has worked well to perfection since 16 total players have found the back of the net for them this term.

Emil Forsberg tops their scoring with eight goals and five assists, while Christopher Nkunku, Angelino, and Marcel Sabitzer are all level with seven goals.

Dani Olmo, Yussuf Poulsen, and Alexander Sorloth are also potent threats with six goals apiece, while Willi Orban, Nordi Mukiele, and Amadou Haidara have shown their versatility with four goals each.

RB Leipzig have been getting the job done on the defencive end as well, only conceding 28 goals this term.

First choice goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi has been a brick wall at goal, leading the league in clean sheets with 15 this season.

VfL Wolfsburg are close to the finish line

Die Wolfe cannot afford to lose here since it will complicate matters as far as their Champions League hopes are concerned.

Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt have winnable matches against Mainz and Schalke respectively. And assuming they’ll both win this week, they can cut into Wolfsburg’s slim lead.

Leading the way as always will be their top scorer in Wout Weghorst, who has generated 20 goals and seven goals. The big Dutch striker is currently fourth in the Golden Boot award behind Andre Silva, Erling Haaland, and Robert Lewandowski.

But their work will be cut out for them particularly at the back since Leipzig have so many weapons that can create Bundesliga 2021 highlights.

Goalkeeper Koen Casteels will aim to draw level with Peter Gulacsi in most clean sheets this term. However, he can’t do it all alone.

History

Julian Nagelsmann’s side has been the better team against Oliver Glasner’s in the overall head-to-heads.

In their last 14 matches against each other, the Red Bulls have won six, while the Wolves won three games along with five draws.

RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg have drawn three straight times prior to this Sunday. But before that, Die Roten Bullen have won three in their last four matches spanning from February to October 2019.

These teams last squared off in the DFB-Pokal semis where Leipzig won 2-0 as Yussuf Poulsen and Hwang Hee-Chan recorded one goal apiece in the second half.

Die Wolfe have lost five of their last seven games against top-seven teams so far this season.
