ATK Mohun Bagan or the Mariners as they are fondly called have a stern test against the Marina Machans, Chennaiyin FC next up. Antonio Lopez Habas’s Mariners haven’t put a foot wrong this season and have dropped points just on a couple of games so far. They are yet to concede a goal from open play and are a difficult opponent to play against in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). Here’s how both teams are shaping up ahead of this important clash.
Csaba Laszlo was distraught after their draw against SC East Bengal in the previous match. He felt that his team did create enough chances to seal the three points but just wasn’t clinical enough in front of goal. That has pretty much been the story of the season so far for the Marina Machans and next up for them are ATK Mohun Bagan who are robust defensively.
Their defence has time and time failed to keep up with the pressure of the opposition and will surely be tested against the deadly duo of David Williams and Roy Krishna. Chennaiyin have some promising attacking options in Lallianzuala Chhangte who got his first goal of the season in the previous match and their captain Rafael Crivellaro who is one of the best creative midfield players in the league.
Csaba Laszlo would be happy to welcome Isma Goncalves back into the side after the latter recovered from a hamstring injury. The attacker might offer more firepower upfront. Reagan Singh has served his one-match ban and will be available for this clash.
ATK MOHUN BAGAN
The Mariners have a chance to go top of the table with either a win or a draw in this match. They haven’t scored many goals this season so far to kill the games but the defensive trio of Tiri, Sandesh Jhingan and Pritam Kotal is the best in the league and continue to string together solid performances.
Habas and his team will be happy to see David Williams get his first goal for the club and get his season up and running. After struggling with a few injury issues earlier in the season, the Australian is back to normal fitness and now the Mariners’ fans would be able to see the best of their number nine.
Apart from the long-term injured players, the Spaniard has all his foreign players available for this encounter and he will have a problem of plenty in this match.
Chennaiyin FC (4-1-2-3): Vishal Kaith (GK); Reagan Singh, Eli Sabia, Enes Sipovic, Jerry Lalrinzuala; Deepak Tangri; Anirudh Thapa, Rafael Crivellaro; Lallianzuala Chhangte, Isma Goncalves, Jakub Sylvestr
ATK Mohun Bagan (4-3-3): Arindam Bhattacharja (GK); Sandesh Jhingan, Tiri, Pritam Kotal, Subhasish Bose; Carl McHugh, Pronay Halder, Edu Garcia; David Williams, Roy Krishna, Manvir Singh
Antonio Lopez Habas expects a tough challenge in their next match. “Chennaiyin for me are favourites for the title. They were finalists last time around. For me, Chennaiyin are operating at a very high level. We respect the players and coaches of Chennaiyin. I think they’ll be a tough opponent for us.”
