Erling Haaland, Neymar Jr, Alvaro Morata and Marcus Rashford all finished the group stage of the UEFA Champions League as the joint-highest goal scorers with six goals each. It was a fascinating phase of football in the Champions League as we came across many dramatic subplots. This was the first time two greats of the current era, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi locked horns in the group stage of the Champions League. Group H and Group B kept us on the edge of our seats till the very last minute. We saw a never seen before gesture with the players leaving the field following a racial incident.
It was an action-packed group stage of the Champions League and here are the top performers from it.
ERLING HAALAND (Borussia Dortmund)
The Norwegian finished the group stage as the joint-highest goal scorer with six goals to his name. Erling Haaland’s left foot is probably the deadliest commodity in the football world currently and the 20-year-old striker scored goals at an astonishing rate – one goal every 57.5 minutes. The Dortmund striker helped his team finish the group as the leaders and will be looking to continue his rich goal scoring form in the upcoming stages as well.
NEYMAR JR (Paris Saint-Germain)
Group H was by far the toughest group of them all and French champions PSG came out with flying colours. The man in the centre of all of the major action was Brazilain star Neymar Jr. He had mentioned in one of the pressers that he didn’t join PSG to play in the Europa League and he made sure that he got his troops together to clinch the top spot of Group H.
ALVARO MORATA (Juventus FC)
Juventus were grouped with Ronald Koeman’s FC Barcelona in the same group and many backed the Catalan giants to take that first spot but Alvaro Morata ensured that his club gets a favourable tie in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. He finished the group stage as the joint-highest scorer with six goals that accounted for 43% of the goals scored by the Turin club in the group stage. He has formed a formidable partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo and will be difficult to stop in the knockout stage of the Champions League.
ALASSANE PLEA (Borussia Monchengladbach)
Bundesliga teams enjoyed a successful group stage in the Champions League and another Bundesliga star Alassane Plea lit the tournament on fire. The Gladbach winger finished with five goals and three assists which was the most goal contribution by a player in the group stage of the Champions League. Group B gave us some surprise results and Borussia Monchengladbach finished second in the group ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan.
