Grit, determination and a never-say-die attitude would be the three appropriate words to describe ATK Mohun Bagan’s performance against Hyderabad FC at the Tilak Maidan, Goa on Monday which ended 2-2. The Mariners were looking to script history in this match as a win would have made them the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) Shield winners but Manolo Marquez’s side had other plans.
Hyderabad FC saw a red card pretty early in the first half and played the majority of the game with 10 men on the field. However, they managed to set up compactly and looked dangerous on the counter-attack. They were a man down but a goal up going into the first half. ATK Mohun Bagan got back in the game thanks to a brilliant goal by Manvir Singh, but again fell behind in the second half to some sloppy defending. But post the 75th minute, it was all a Mariners show and they did create plenty of chances to level the match and take a point.
It wasn’t the best performance by the team as coach Antonio Lopez Habas described in his post-match thoughts but still had plenty of positives to look at from the 2-2 draw. Here are the top ATK Mohun Bagan players from the match.
MANVIR SINGH – 8/10
Manvir Singh has been the go-to player for Habas this season and that is a big positive for Indian football going ahead. The forward yet again stepped up when his team needed a goal and provided the momentum needed to go on to win the game. He is playing in a difficult wing-back position in the past couple of games but has done well both defensively and offensively.
PRITAM KOTAL – 8/10
Pritam Kotal has been the standout player in the past few matches for the Mariners. He is leading the team by example and scored late in this match to seal a point from this game. Post the injury to Sandesh Jhingan and the substitution of Tiri, Kotal was deployed as a second centre-back in a back four and he did that job effectively as well. He also popped up with a goal on the right end of the pitch in the last attack of the match to wrap up his solid night.
DAVID WILLIAMS – 7/10
The Aussie forward, David Williams was menacing throughout the match and would be disappointed that he didn’t get a goal to show for the efforts he put in the game. He was clear on goal in the fourth minute when the Hyderbad FC defender pulled him back and got sent off for stopping a goalscoring opportunity. Late in the second half, he pulled off a clever set-piece routine to get his team level in the match.
CARL MCHUGH – 7/10
Carl McHugh was solid as ever in this match as well and even provided some creative sparks for the Mariners to break the low block of Hyderabad FC. Late in the second half, he was deployed as the centre back in the back four alongside Pritam Kotal and saw the game out for his team.
SUBHASHISH BOSE – 7/10
With Hyderabad FC a man down very early in the match, Subhashish Bose found plenty of space for himself on the left side of the pitch. He was up against a makeshift full-back in Nikhil Poojary and he did cause plenty of problems for the opposition. Defensively he was against a pacey winger in Liston Colaco and did well to keep him at bay for the majority of the match.
