Roy to Carl McHugh: ATKMB Player of the Season Contenders

In a season of ups and downs, ATK Mohun Bagan can be proud of the way the team performed in their debut Hero Indian Super League (ISL) season in extremely challenging circumstances. The bubble life, matches every three-four days, without spectators to cheer them in the grounds and in the scorching heat of Goa, the players gave it their all and finished runners up in the league. Players like Roy Krishna, Carl McHugh and a few others were the leaders on and off the pitch and genuine contenders for the Player of the Season Award.

We’d look at five such players in this blog who put in consistent effort throughout the season and are up for this award.

ROY KRISHNA

The Hero of the League Award winner, Roy Krishna had yet another brilliant season in the Hero ISL. The striker was the highest goalscorer and the highest assist provider for the Mariners this season. He led his side charismatically to the final of the competition and was one of the most influential players in the league this season.

ARINDAM BHATTACHARJA

The winner of the Golden Glove Award, Arindam Bhattacharja showed yet again why he is considered one of the best shot-stoppers in the country. He kept things stable at the back for the team in the majority of the matches and was rightly the winner of the Golden Glove Award.

MANVIR SINGH

Manvir Singh can be proud of what he achieved this season. He started the season on the bench and was an impact player off the bench for the coaching staff. By the end of the season, he was one of the mainstays in the team and the biggest goal threat in all the matches he played. He also did a job on the right wing-back position which isn’t his natural position and did well there as well.

SANDESH JHINGAN

The pillar in defence for the Mariners, Sandesh Jhingan showed that he is a top-quality centre back this season. He was calm on the ball and rarely got beaten in the air or in a duel. He was a constant threat from set-pieces and also responsible for defending those in his own box.

CARL MCHUGH

The Irish centre-midfield player, Carl McHugh was the controller in that position for the team throughout the season. He was responsible for keeping things balanced and helping out his back four in all games. Whoever played alongside McHugh got better as that’s his best quality. He does the dirty work on the field and makes others around him look better.
