ATK Mohun Bagan have been making statement signings one after another before the upcoming 2021-22 season and the most recent one is arguably one of the most creative players of the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL), Hugo Boumous from Mumbai City FC. The 25-year-old French-Moroccon star midfielder has signed a whopping five-year contract with the Mariners and by doing so, has become the first foreign signing to sign such a long-term contract in Indian football.
So what does the singing of Hugo Boumous mean to the Mariners? Let’s find out.
CREATIVITY AT ITS BEST
In the past couple of years, Boumous has taken the level at the Hero ISL to a whole new level. The creative midfielder had a memorable season with FC Goa in 2019-20 where he finished in double figures in both the assists and goalscoring charts. This was the first and only time a player had achieved that feat. In the previous season with Mumbai City FC, Boumous got three goals and seven assists in the Islanders’ journey to being crowned the Hero ISL champions and Shield winner.
He is a flair player in the middle of the park and can take games away from the opposition single-handedly. He is also lethal on the counter-attack which would suit extremely well with the way Antonio Lopez Habas likes his team to play.
In just three seasons in Indian football, Hugo Boumous has lifted the Hero ISL Shield twice, once with FC Goa (2019-20) and once with Mumbai City FC (2020-21). He has also won the Hero Super Cup in the 2018-19 season with the Gaurs. He was awarded as the Player of the Tournament in the 2019-20 season and won the ultimate prize with Mumbai as they were crowned champions in the previous season.
On signing for the club, Boumous has made his intentions clear in the club’s statement. This is what he had to say, “I am always hungry to win the trophy. I have brought success to the clubs that I have played in. And I shall keep this in mind as I play again. I will do my best to win. I am looking forward to seeing the passion and excitement of the Green and Maroon supporters after winning the match. My goal is to win the AFC Cup and the Indian Super League.”
VALUABLE HERO ISL EXPERIENCE
Before the start of this season, Boumous would have already had 4211 minutes in the Hero ISL with both FC Goa and Mumbai City FC. In those 58 matches, the midfielder has found the back of the net 19 times and leads the all-time assist charts with 24 to his name. It wouldn’t take him time to get himself up to speed in the league given his prior experience of playing in India. He is not someone who would succumb under pressure and rather would relish playing in the iconic Green and Maroon of the Mariners.
