Two historical rivals go head to head as Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United take on Frank Lampard’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This will be Leeds’ first visit to the Bridge since the 2004 season. This weekend will witness the return of fans in some selected stadiums for the first time in the Premier League this season. 2,000 home fans are permitted to attend games in Brighton, Liverpool, London and Southampton from this gameweek onwards. The clubs in these cities can begin to host fans coming back to the stadiums while others will need to wait a bit longer.
The rivalry between Leeds United and Chelsea has been as even as it’s possible. In 24 previous meetings have produced eight wins each for Leeds and Chelsea and eight draws. Can one team get ahead in the head-to-head battle? Let’s find out.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea kept city rivals Tottenham Hotspur at bay in their last Premier League outing. They sit pretty on the third spot with five wins from ten matches in the league so far. They are the joint-highest goalscorers in the league and have the second best defensive record this season. It indicates that after a season of heavy spending Frank Lampard is finally getting Chelsea to the top of the table. Olivier Giroud scored four goals in their recent Champions League match Sevilla and it’ll be interesting to see whether he gets the nod ahead of Tammy Abraham remember Giroud is yet to score in the Premier League this season.
PREDICTED CHELSEA XI
Eduoard Mendy (GK); Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva (C), Kurt Zouma, Reece James; N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic; Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham, Hakim Ziyech
The Whites got back to winning courtesy a late goal by Raphinha at Goodison Park against Everton. It marked their first win at that ground and first win in three Premier League games. With four wins in ten games, Leeds are twelfth in the table so far and a win would mean that they’ll easily break into the top half of the table. In their last match they had thirteen shots in the first half alone, the joint-most in any Premier League half this season. They are relentless in attack and keep attacking the opponent from every part of the final third.
PREDICTED LEEDS UNITED XI
Illan Meslier (GK); Ezgjan Alioksi, Liam Cooper (C), Robin Koch, Luke Ayling; Kalvin Phillips; Mateusz Klich, Stuart Dallas, Jack Harrison, Raphinha; Patrick Bamford
PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Timo Werner will look to capitalise on his pace against Luke Ayling on the left side of the Chelsea attack and can cause harm to the Leeds defence. Werner is Chelsea’s highest goalscorer in the league so far and Leeds will have to be wary of his pace.
Patrick Bamford returns to Stamford Bridge with a point to prove. His dream of playing for the Blues got over pretty early in his career and now he is at the top of his game coming into this match. He is the third highest goalscorer in away Premier League matches and could be a handful for the Chelsea defence.
