The top of the table clash in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL), ATK Mohun Bagan vs Mumbai City FC proved to be a fiery encounter in which the Islanders picked up the all-important three points. Antonio Lopez Habas’ gameplan almost worked as the Mariners kept Sergio Lobera’s Mumbai City FC at bay for the majority of the contest. But Bartholomew Ogbeche, who got a surprise start ahead of the regular striker Adam Le Fondre, scored a beautiful goal to give Mumbai a five-point advantage over the Mariners.
It was a game of two halves for ATK Mohun Bagan as they were ineffective in the first half and Mumbai dominated the play in the first 45 minutes. But at half-time, Habas made a couple of changes and reverted back to his preferred 3-5-2 formation. These changes almost worked as ATK Mohun Bagan were much better in the second half and had decent opportunities to clinch all three points.
Here are your top Mariners from ATK Mohun Bagan vs Mumbai City FC.
ARINDAM BHATTACHARJA – 7.5/10
Even though Arindam Bhattacharja would rue the missed opportunity of extending his clean sheet run this 2020-21 season, he was still colossal at the back for the Mariners and had a busy game between the sticks. He made some crucial saves in this match and also stopped a one-on-one situation against Adam Le Fondre. He made six important saves in this game and kept his side in the game for a long time.
SANDESH JHINGAN – 7/10
Sandesh Jhingan did commit a few errors in the first half when it came to playing out from the back but in the second half, he was much better. He slotted in as the left-sided centre back in the second 45 and looked really comfortable on the ball and it was almost impossible to dribble past him in this game. He ran the most in this game and that tells us he is back to his peak fitness and that’s good news for Indian football in general.
JAVI HERNÁNDEZ – 6.5/10
Javi Hernadez was making a comeback in the team after missing the last few matches due to an injury. Immediately you could see what ATK Mohun Bagan were missing in the previous few games as the Spaniard is extremely comfortable on the ball and provides the creative spark to this side. The coach gave him 80 minutes on his comeback game and he created some quality chances in those minutes.
EDU GARCIA – 6/10
Edu Garcia had the chance of the game on the 58th minute as he found himself one-on-one with the opposition keeper. He was through on goal and was unlucky when he hit the woodwork and failed to find the back of the net. He also had a freekick just before this chance and he worked the keeper this time around. With the quality Edu Garcia possesses, one would expect him to put these chances away, but it just wasn’t his day.
DAVID WILLIAMS – 6/10
In a match where the forwards didn’t have many chances, David Williams worked his socks off. He ran for the entire 90 minutes and also had a great chance late in the game. If it wasn’t for Mourtada Fall, Willo would have equalised for the Mariners. The team has to create more chances for players like David Williams and Roy Krishna to display their class.
