Premier League Team of the Year Contenders Across Positions

With single-digit games left for all teams in the top-flight of English football, it is time that people start discussing contenders for the Premier League Team of the Year. We have listed here position-specific players who have been outstanding throughout the campaign and have played a pivotal role in their respective teams. Each position has been given three standout options and the competition is fierce.

Here are the players who we believe can make it to the Premier League Team of the Year.

GOALKEEPERS

Ederson Morales (Manchester City)

Golden Glove contender, Manchester City’s Ederson is leading the way with 17 clean sheets. He has been an important part of the best defence of the league and is a big reason why Manchester City are runaway leaders in the division.

Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa)

Emiliano Martinez was brilliant in the previous season with Arsenal but shockingly was let go by the Gunners in the summer transfer window. Aston Villa were lucky to find a world-class shot-stopper in Martinez and his numbers speak for itself. He has kept 14 clean sheets so far in the league which is the second-highest.

Nick Pope (Burnley)

Nick Pope has made it through to the England national team and pundits are backing him to be England’s number one for the Euros 2020. Pope has helped Burnley massively in their quest for survival and has kept 9 clean sheets so far.

DEFENDERS

Right-Back

Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

To be fair, Joao Cancelo could have made the list as a left-back as well but we’ve gone for his natural right-back position. He has been outstanding for Pep Guardiola this season and has executed exactly what Guardiola wants his wing back to do on the pitch in build-up play.

Luke Ayling (Leeds United)

The ever-present Luke Ayling has been a key part of Leeds United’s first season back in the Premier League. He has done well as a right-sided centre-back as well but his best position is at right-back. He is a great passer and has the seventh-highest passes completed in the league.

Vladimir Coufal (West Ham United)

West Ham United’s position in the league table has been a pleasant surprise this season and their new signing Vladimir Coufal has helped them a lot. He is a brilliant tackler and at the same time creates plenty of chances for his team as well.

Centre-Backs

Ruben Dias (Manchester City)

Arguably the signing of the season, Ruben Dias is enjoying life in the Premier League. He has single-handedly improved the quality of City’s defence and is a leader on the pitch. He is calm on the ball and more often than not makes great decisions on the pitch.

Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

Manchester United’s captain, Harry Maguire has helped the ‘Red Devils’ bridge the gap to the league toppers. The build-up play goes through Maguire and his passing ability is second to none.

John Stones (Manchester City)

This has been quite the story of the season as we’ve seen the resurgence of John Stones this year. He has kept Aymeric Laporte out of the XI and is back to his best. He has been a big positive for City this season and for England as well for the Euros.

Left-Back

Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

For a long time, it felt like Luke Shaw had tapered off and wouldn’t be able to fulfil his potential. He has kept himself fit for this season and now we can see why Luke Shaw is considered as one of the top talents in England.

Aaron Cresswell (West Ham United)

Aaron Cresswell has been the highest creating defender in the league this year with seven assists. He has a brilliant set-piece delivery and defensively is solid as well.

Lucas Digne (Everton)

Another left-back who has been great going forward has been Everton’s Lucas Digne. He has six assists this season, having missed some part of the season due to injuries. He is a top leader on the pitch for Everton as well and an accomplished defender.

MIDFIELDERS

Holding Midfielders

Thomas Soucek (West Ham United)

Another contender for the singing of the season has been Thomas Soucek. He has built a wonderful partnership with Declan Rice. He pops up with some important goals for the Hammers and is solid defensively as well.

Rodri (Manchester City)

An indispensable member of Manchester City’s midfield trio is Rodri. Guardiola loves his ability to control the tempo of the match and his passing ability is top-class.

Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)

A player of the season contender, Ilkay Gundogan upped the ante when his side needed him the most. His goalscoring form has been brilliant and has scored on plenty of occasions when his side was begging for a goal from somewhere.

Attacking Midfielder

Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Bruno Fernandes is slowly becoming one of the best players in the Premier League. He has shown his class since his first day at Old Trafford and has continued to perform this season as well. With 11 assists and 16 goals, he has been the highest-scoring midfielder in the league.

Mason Mount (Chelsea)

Every manager who works with Mason Mount makes sure that he is one of the first names on the team sheet. Mount is brilliant at what he does and is a complete number 10 in all respects.

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Like not much has been said about Kevin de Bruyne already. Don’t have much to add apart from the act that he is one of the best players in the world, not just this league. He seems leaps and bounds ahead of his competitors in this position.

ATTACKERS

Left Winger

Heung-Min Son (Tottenham Hotspur)

One of the most hard-working players in the league, Son has 13 goals in the Tottenham jersey. His partnership with Harry Kane is lethal and at the start of the season, the duo broke plenty of records together.

Jack Grealish (Aston Villa)

One of the stories of the season has been the rise of Jack Grealish. He is by far England’s most exciting attacking player and Aston Villa has benefited a lot from his top-class form.

Harvey Barnes (Leicester City)

Harvey Barnes may look like a surprise pick in this list, but he has the best player at Leicester this season. He has helped his team become a regular top-four team and credit needs to go to Brendan Rodgers for his improvement.

Right Winger

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Season in, season out, Mohamed Salah has been constantly been fighting for the Golden Boot Award. His team has had a shocking season but Salah has been the sole bright spot. He continues scoring at a remarkable rate and is easily one of the best right-wingers in the league.

Raphinha (Leeds United)

Leeds United have bought a world-class player in Raphinha this season. He is a talented player who many clubs have got their eyes on now. He is exactly what Marcelo Bielsa wants from his winger and has been one of Leeds’ players of the season.

Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City)

In the Manchester City team which is filled with an abundance of attacking talent, Riyad Mahrez usually goes under the radar. But he has been brilliant for the Cityzens this season whether it’s from the start or from the bench.

Striker

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Easily the best striker in the league, Harry Kane has been in rich goalscoring form this season. Some believe that it is time for Harry to find a new challenge away from Spurs so that he could win silverware in his career.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)

Carlo Anceoltti absolutely adores Dominc Calvert-Lewin. The striker has proved that he is a brilliant player in the making and is England’s number two striker now.

Patrick Bamford (Leeds United)

Postman Pat always delivers for Leeds. He has been remarkable for the Whites this season and has proven most of his doubters wrong about his goal-scoring ability.
