The PFA Player of the Year Award is granted to the outstanding individual over the course of a Premier League season. The past winners include generational talents like Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney and more recently, Kevin de Bruyne and Virgil van Dijk who are considered modern-day greats of football.
The winner of this award is always debated till its very end as the Premier League is extremely competitive and for one player to be leagues above the others is unlikely. This year as well the race for the award seems as close as it gets. Here are the top five contenders who could be awarded the PFA Player of the Year.
ILKAY GUNDOGAN (Manchester City)
The unsung hero of Manchester City’s remarkable display in the Premier League has been their German midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan. City were struggling to score goals early in the season due to the lack of strikers available to Pep Guardiola due to various injuries. Gundogan took up the responsibility of scoring some vital goals and has popped up in the opposition box time and again throughout the season.
Gundogan has the special ability to smell the possible danger to the opposition in their box and is at the right place at the right time very often. He has 12 goals in the Premier League this season and is one of the front runners for the PFA Player of the Year Award.
BRUNO FERNANDES (Manchester United)
Ever since Bruno Fernandes set foot in Manchester, he has managed to lift up the atmosphere in and around Old Trafford. The Portuguese has had a magnificent start to life in the Premier League and has emerged as one of the leaders in the United dressing room.
This season with 16 goals, he stands as the third-highest goalscorer in the league and the highest-scoring midfielder. He has helped United bridge the gap to the top of the table and continues to wow fans with some unbelievable goals.
MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool)
Mohamed Salah has been a part of a Liverpool team that has struggled tremendously in their title defence. So much so that they find themselves out of the race and are struggling to make it to the top four. Salah though has been outstanding when it comes to his goalscoring form.
The Egyptian has always been under-appreciated by football fans given the kind of numbers he has managed to achieve during his time with Liverpool. This season as well he looks well on the course of fighting for the Golden Boot Award as he is tied for the top spot with Harry Kane with 17 goals.
HARRY KANE (Tottenham Hotspur)
Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in world football currently. His finishing is unreal and is a complete striker. This season he has been a part of a struggling Tottenham side who have been criticised time and again for the brand of football they play. To Kane’s credit, he gives it his all in the white shirt and his goal tally shows exactly that.
With 17 goals, Kane is also leading when it comes to assists leaders in the league and has formed a lethal partnership with his strike partner Son Heung-Min.
KEVIN DE BRUYNE (Manchester City)
Kevin De Bruyne became the first Manchester City player to win the PFA Player of the Award last season for his 20 assists and 13 goals. If the Belgian midfielder was to win the award again this year then he’ll become the first player to do so since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008.
He already has 11 assists to his name this season after missing out on some game time in the past few months. He is back fit for the Cityzens and can put on a late run for the award.
