The change of approach by the Mariners was quite evident as they took on Chennaiyin FC in match 66 of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). Antonio Lopez Habas was concerned with the lack of chances the team had created in the past few matches and the aggressive intent with which he set his team up in this game was apparent from the offset.
David Williams came off the bench in the 70th minute and headed his team home to pick up the all-important three points against Chennaiyin FC in added time. With this win, ATK Mohun Bagan are now just a couple of points away from being back on the top of the league. This match saw plenty of action in the second half, a set-piece goal, a goal-line clearance and a thunder free-kick which almost went in.
Here are the top Mariners from the game against Chennaiyin FC.
DAVID WILLIAMS – 9/10
Super-sub David Williams was the impact man for the Mariners in this match against Csaba Lazlo’s Chennaiyin FC. A lot of eyebrows were raised when the Australian wasn’t named in the starting line up in this game. But from the start, it was obvious that the forward will have a role to play to break the deadlock in this game. From Javi Hernandez’s corner, Williams lost his marker near the six-yard box and headed his team to a big win. He was also named as the Hero of the Match in this game.
TIRI – 8.5/10
If a kid needs to learn the art of playing centre-back then there’s no better example than Tiri to follow. The Spanish defender has it all to be a top-class centre back. He is calm on the ball and his distribution from the back is the best in the league. He is strong in the air and rarely loses a one-on-one situation. In this game, he showed that even if his keeper is beaten, there’s still the wall of Tiri to beat to score a goal against the Mariners. He pulled off a goal-line clearance at the last minute of the game and ensured that they left the Fatorda Stadium with all three points.
JAVI HERNÁNDEZ – 8.5/10
Along with Edu Garcia, Javi Hernandez is easily the most creative player in the ATK Mohun Bagan squad. His ability to pick out a killer pass in the final third was lacking in the past few games. With him starting the match against Chennaiyin FC, everybody saw the difference the Spaniard is able to make in these tight situations. He was a bit unlucky as Vishal Kaith pulled off an extraordinary save from his free-kick late in the second half. He got an assist when David Williams scored from his resulting corner. Overall Javi was one of the standout players in the game and created the difference for the Mariners.
SANDESH JHINGAN – 8/10
Sandesh Jhingan was given the role of marking Chennaiyin FC’s star forward Isma Goncalves. The Indian national did that role exceptionally well throughout the 90 minutes of the game. More often than not he put his body on the line and made sure that he didn’t give an inch to his opponent. It was a warrior-like performance by Jhingan and he helped his side keep yet another clean sheet.
ARINDAM BHATTACHARJA – 7/10
Arindam did commit a few unusual errors in this game but his defenders were there to bail him out from these difficult situations. Nevertheless, he still had enough to do in this game and made sure that his team stacked up, another clean sheet for the season. His distribution from the back was also spot on and that helps his team in the build-up play.
