Things to Know Ahead of ATK Mohun Bagan vs Kerala Blasters FC

For the last match of January 2021 in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL), ATK Mohun Bagan will host Kerala Blasters at the iconic Fatorda Stadium. Results in the new year have been a mixed bag for the Mariners, as they have managed to win only two games out of the five played so far. So this match against Kerala Blasters will be a key one as they’d look to end the month with three points.

The reverse fixture of this game was the season opener for the 2020-21 season when ATK Mohun Bagan on their Hero ISL debut managed to get the better of the Blasters, 0-1 courtesy a typical Roy Krishna goal. The match was a fascinating tactical battle between the two Spanish coaches and things have changed greatly since that night in November.

ATK MOHUN BAGAN

The Mariners were stunned in their previous match against NorthEast United as they conceded a rare second goal in the match and eventually lost the game, 2-1. Antonio Lopez Habas would be concerned with what he saw in the second half of that match but it wouldn’t shake their confidence as so far in the thirteen matches they have played, they have looked solid for a top two finish in the league stage.

David Williams was substituted as he suffered a muscle injury in the first half against the Highlanders and they will be sweating on his fitness for this match. In an exciting move, ATK Mohun Bagan have swapped Marcelinho from Odisha FC with Brad Inman going the other way. Marcelinho has been extremely successful in the Hero ISL over the years but has found life under Stuart Baxter with Odisha FC slightly tricky. He will for sure provide the creative spark for the Mariners and his goal contribution skills will be required by the Kolkata giants.

KERALA BLASTERS

The story of the season so far for the Blasters have been fairly predictable. Another season when the team has played some good football but have been led down by top players misfiring. At the same time, injuries to key players like Sergio Cidoncha has made life difficult for Kibu Vicuna in his debut Hero ISL season.

They have found some form in the past few matches and have put together an unbeaten run of five games coming into this match. They need more goals in their team and need their big summer signing Gary Hooper to be firing consistently. Facundo Pereyra, who has been providing the most chances to Kerala Blasters recently, suffered a hairline fracture and is ruled out for this match.
