Covid-19 has certainly impacted the football world when it comes to the finances involved in the game as the transfer budgets of various clubs have been dwarfed as compared to a usual season. Still, clubs like Manchester United and Paris St. Germain have been able to splash their cash and attract players like Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos from a massive club like Real Madrid this transfer window.
In this piece, we are looking at all the top transfers from Europe’s top five leagues in the summer window so far.
REAL MADRID TO MANCHESTER UNITED
Raphael Varane was one of the young players who Sir Alex Ferguson was close to signing years ago. Since then, the French defender has won plenty of high profile trophies with both club and country. It was always Varane’s dream of playing in the Premier League and he needed a new challenge in his life. He has joined Manchester United for a decent fee and it is a statement of intent by the Red Devils. They’d be hoping that he makes them instant title favourites this season.
REAL MADRID TO PARIS SAINT GERMAIN
Even though Sergio Ramos is currently 35-years-old, signing a defender of Ramos’ capability is going to be appreciated by the PSG faithful. The French club have handed him the two-year contract that Real Madrid were not willing to offer. He should come in with his vast experience of winning everything in world football and would improve PSG’s defence immediately.
AC MILAN TO PARIS SAINT GERMAIN
Gianluigi Donnarumma is amongst the very best young goalkeepers in the world currently and PSG have done well to land the 22-year-old on a free transfer from AC Milan. The Italian keeper is riding high on confidence given how the European Championship ended for his nation and him. He will be up against Keylor Navas for the No. 1 spot this season and it will be interesting to see who Mauricio Pochettino prefers in the key matches of the season.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND TO MANCHESTER UNITED
Jadon Sancho has become one of the best young wingers in the game at Dortmund and the winger is coming home to where it all began for his footballing career. United already have a plethora of fine young attacking talent, but Sancho is a game-changer. It’s a massive transfer statement to their rivals and the club.
SEVILLA TO TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
The 20-year-old Spain winger, Bryan Gil hasn’t played much for Sevilla since making his debut in 2019 but has impressed on loan at both Leganes and Eibar. A livewire dribbler with good skills on the ball, Gil looks like a special talent. Tottenham have moved Erik Lamela in the other direction and it has become a swap deal between the two clubs.
BAYERN MUNICH TO REAL MADRID
The 28-year-old David Alaba clearly had a new challenge in mind and Madrid have got themselves a world-class player who can operate in several different positions. Even though they got him on a free transfer, they are paying an exorbitant wage to the Austrian footballer. With the departure of both Varane and Ramos in a single window, they’d be looking at Alaba to take that leadership role at the heart of the defence.
INTER MILAN TO PARIS SAINT GERMAIN
Inter Milan have been in financial trouble for some time now and this summer they had to move their star players out to cash in. Achraf Hakimi was one of their young stars who moved on to PSG for quite some money. PSG have shown a willingness to spend big in certain positions and now they have a top quality right-back. The Morocco international is only 22, but he’s already world-class.
RB LEIPZIG TO LIVERPOOL
One of the top young defenders in Europe, Ibrahima Konate got himself a big move this summer. Liverpool struggled the previous season to get their first-choice centre-backs fit and have let go of Ozan Kabak as well. So it was important they did recruit in that position in this transfer window.
MANCHESTER CITY TO FC BARCELONA
With 260 goals in 389 games for Manchester City, Aguero is one of the best strikers to have ever played in the Premier League. At 32, and with a season of injury struggles behind him, he has opted for a new challenge and still has plenty to offer. At Barcelona, he would reunite with one of his best friends in Lionel Messi. He would be hoping to get up and running quickly in the Spanish league which he knows really well from his time in Atletico Madrid.
LIVERPOOL TO PARIS SAINT GERMAIN
It became official at the end of last season that Georginio Wijnaldum would leave Liverpool on a free transfer. The Dutch midfielder was always likely to join Barcelona but PSG swooped in out of nowhere and acquired the services of Wijnaldum. PSG’s manager Pochettino has been a fan of Wijnaldum for some time now and it would be interesting to see them combine in France.
OL LYON TO FC BARCELONA
Memphis Depay has had a career full of ups and downs so far. He had a disappointing spell in England with Manchester United but reignited his career in France with Lyon. Now he has moved to a top club of Europe and would reunite with manager Ronaldo Koeman at Barcelona. Memphis has moved on a free transfer and it would be interesting to see where he fits in a squad filled with world-class attacking talent.
