Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has recently made the headlines for both on and off-field antics. What should have been a week to remember for the Uruguayan forward turned out to be a nightmare one following a racist word used by him on social media.
Manchester United were down by two goals against Southampton on Sunday when Edinson Cavani came off the bench and scored a brace to seal the vital three points for the Reds in the English domestic league. United’s domestic form hadn’t been great leading up to this game and they needed an X-factor player like Cavani to have an impact coming off the bench. What could have been the kickstart to his career as a United striker has taken a turn for the worse as he might face a ban in the upcoming matches. He’d be desperate to take the field against his former club, PSG.
Nevertheless, Man United’s form in the Champions League has been commendable. In the group of death, they find themselves leading the group with the best chances of qualifying for the next round. They now face Paris Saint-Germain at home in their fifth match of the group stage. Here’s what to expect from this fascinating tie.
With three wins in four matches and a shocking defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir, United finds themselves in the pole position of qualifying for the next round. They still have two difficult games left against PSG and RB Leipzig in the group but if they go on to win either one of them or avoid defeat in one then they are through to the Round of 16 of the Champions League. They have managed to put together a run of three consecutive victories in the Premier League as well and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to have found the system the team is comfortable with. David de Gea had to leave the pitch against Southampton because of a knee injury so he’s doubtful for the match against PSG. Promising young English shot-stopper Dean Henderson is expected to start this match. Paul Pogba is in contention to make his United comeback in this match but his place in the starting lineup isn’t certain.
Thomas Tuchel’s men have uncharacteristically lost three matches in the Ligue One but still, find themselves top of the table in the French league. They won against RB Leipzig in their previous Champions League match and are tied on points with the German side with six points. PSG have won just two of their last five matches and the pressure is on coach Thomas Tuchel to turn their season around. They lost to United at home and revenge will be on the cards for the French giants. Thilo Kehrer, Juan Bernat, Julian Draxler and Mauro Icardi are all likely to miss out.
Manchester United (4-3-1-2): Dean Henderson; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Alex Telles; Fred, Nemanja Matic, Donny Van de Beek; Bruno Fernandes; Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani
PSG (4-3-3): Keylor Navas; Alessandro Florenzi, Abdou Diallo, Presnel Kimpembe, Mitchel Bakker; Marco Verratti, Marquinhos, Ander Herrera; Angel Di Maria, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar Jr
