In a world where cricket press conferences are considered boring, there are certain individuals in the cricketing fraternity who are always looking to entertain the world with some witty responses. These players, more often than not, stand out to bring a chuckle from the press room and help make mundane cricket press conferences entertaining.
Today, we’ll look at five such instances where the cricketers stole the show with their responses to the press.
ROHIT SHARMA’S ADVICE FOR PAKISTAN BATSMEN
This particular clip went viral last year. In the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Rohit Sharma was the busiest Indian cricketer and we saw his face in a majority of cricket press conferences of the tournament. When asked if he had any advice for the Pakistani batting order, Sharma came up with this witty response. This was so widely admired that ESPNcricinfo made a Hindi rap song on it’ ‘Abhi Kya Bataoonga?’. Enjoy this piece of art.
MS DHONI ON HIS RETIREMENT SPECULATION
From the offset, it seems that Dhoni was expecting this question entering this particular press conference. After the 2016 T20 World Cup people expected MS Dhoni to announce his retirement from cricket, but Dhoni was having none of it. He had his eyes set on the 2019 Cricket World Cup and announced it in style. He called the Australian journalist over and asked him to sit next to him, interrogated him for a minute and made the journalist answer the question himself. Weirdly, we’re in 2020 and still waiting for Dhoni to announce his retirement. Who could’ve predicted this?
FEISTY MARLON SAMUELS
This one isn’t on the funny side but more on the fierce and feisty side. This was Marlon Samuels in full flow after winning the 2016 T20 Cricket World Cup for the West Indies. He started off by firing at England’s all-rounder Ben Stokes and then followed that up with absolutely destroying Shane Warne. Marlon and Warne have had a few altercations in the Big Bash League and have never really made up after that. In this particular occasion, he claimed that Warne is jealous of him because his face is real and Warne’s isn’t. Savage from the Jamaican!
CAMERON BANCROFT EXPLAINING WHAT A HEADBUTT IS
This one is quite weird, to be honest. While Cameron Bancroft was playing for Western Australia in domestic cricket, he met England’s Jonny Bairstow who was on the tour of Australia for the Ashes. To Bancroft’s surprise, Bairstow greeted him with a ‘headbutt’. That’s right, not a handshake, not a hug or ‘COVID Elbow’ which is trending currently, but a full-fledged headbutt. Funnily enough, Bancroft narrated this anecdote with ease but the British media wanted to know absolutely everything about the incident. Hilariously, in the end, Bancroft had to explain exactly what a headbutt is and where exactly did Bairstow hit him. British media surely are intrigued by absurd things.
“HELLO, IT’S TIM PAINE SPEAKING”
Credit to Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine for being a sport in this instance. In the middle of a cricket press conference after being 0-1 down in a home series, you can expect someone to lose their temper if a phone randomly goes off. But Paine did the right opposite. He picked it up and took the message from the other person, exactly how a good bloke does. This is one of those moments you love to see in cricket press conferences.
